Low Carb Foods
The Atkins diet has increasingly grown in popularity, especially over the last five years or so. The basic principle of the diet is to eat foods that are low in carbohydrates, resulting in weight loss. Most foods that are considered low carb are meats and cheeses, which contain little to almost no carbohydrates.
Foods such as bacon and sausage are low carb foods, but need to be eaten with consideration since they contain preservatives and sugars that do have an effect on the body’s ability to process carbohydrates. Chicken, ground beef, steak, fish, and turkey are just some examples of meats that can be eaten while on the Atkins diet. Cheeses like cottage cheese, American cheese slices, cream cheese, and various deli cheeses are wonderful additions to a low carb diet, and help add flavor to your meals.
Another great food that has very little carbs is eggs. Since eggs can be made in many different ways (such as scrambled, hard boiled, or in an omelet), they are a versatile choice for your diet. The key to low carb foods is remembering that the higher in protein, often the lower in carbs the food will be. Ingesting protein is a healthy way to build muscle while losing fat.
Many companies are now making foods low in carbs that would otherwise be though as fattening and unhealthy. Bagels, English muffins, breads, and even potato chips are now being sold in low carb versions. Avoiding sugar is important to the diet as well, so look for sweet treats that are sugar free to avoid weight gain. Being sure you follow the guidelines closely as to what your daily carb levels are is important and essential when partaking in a low carb diet. With some careful planning, you can lose weight safely and effectively without having to sacrifice taste. Look for recipes and meal ideas online as well as in bookstores. A lot of books are available that provide great tasting and easy low carb recipes.
