Food Poisoning

Food poisoning can be an absolutely terrible experience for anyone who has to deal with it. Occasionally it can even result in a visit to the hospital, depending on the severity of the type of poisoning. Bacteria on and inside of food are the leading causes of food poisoning. Some symptoms include chills, nausea, vomiting, fever, and cramps. There are different kinds of this horrible affliction including salmonella and listeria. There are ways you can avoid contracting food poisoning. The careful handling of uncooked food is paramount to evade getting sick. Temperature control is of the utmost importance. Be aware of what temperature your meats or poultry should be stored and cooked at, and stick to those levels to avoid poisoning. Thoroughly cooking your food at the proper temperature kills the harmful bacteria it may be harboring. Chicken should never be handled without properly washing your hands first, and then should be immediately cooked after the package has been opened. Raw meat of any kind should never make contact with other foods, and once you are done using the cutting board with the uncooked meat, make sure it is washed off thoroughly in hot, soapy water.

How you handle leftovers can be just as important as how the food is handled before cooking. Make sure all leftover foods are stored in airtight containers. Immediately put them in the refrigerator and do not allow them to sit at room temperature for an extended period of time. Other ways to avoid food poisoning is to thoroughly sanitize any surface where food is prepared. Avoid using the same knife, fork, or spoon to eat with as you used to cook food with. Wipe down countertops with an antibacterial cleaner after use. Simply paying attention to these details can help you avoid getting sick from the foods you eat.
